Introduction

Tinikling is a folk dance from the Philippines that lends itself very well to a well-rounded physical education program. It only requires basic, easily-sourced equipment. Tinikling provides moderate to vigorous levels of cardiorespiratory physical activity and builds students’ fitness-related skills including agility, timing, balance, hand/eye coordination, and more. It also will help develop team-building and prosocial skills such as cooperation, teamwork, turn-taking, and communication.

If you want to do all this while also expanding students’ PE beyond the more commonly known games, sports, and dances of the western world, tinikling is a perfect addition to your program.

Target Audience

This course is designed for grade 3-12 physical education teachers.

Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to provide physical educators with a comprehensive unit-plan so you can learn and teach tinikling even if you have never heard of it before. This course will take you from the basic history of tinikling all the way to teaching it lesson by lesson. This course will take you from zero knowledge to teaching a complete unit that is properly sequenced and standards-based.

Course Description

This course is a comprehensive ground-up unit that includes everything from the background/scaffolding information to day-by-day sequenced lesson plans, as well as information about how to source the equipment as easily/cheaply as possible.

You will learn the basic building blocks of the dance as well as how to teach it in a properly sequenced and standards-based unit. This course will give you options to scale the activity up, if desired, to the point where you can have students put on an in-class and whole-school presentation for classmates, teachers, and parents if you so choose.

This course is an online, self-paced experience with an instructor, and assignments can be completed at the student’s own convenience. It is worth 6 professional development hours. There is no graduate credit or CEU credit for this course.
