Webinar: Cultural Competency in AfterSchool

A National AfterSchool Association PD Opportunity

Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to provide educators and out-of-school time professionals the confidence and knowledge to create a culturally competent environment for their students, families and staff. This course will help you self reflect on your cultural competence and help define what cultural competence and culture is. The content provided then identifies how to create a more comfortable environment where individuals can be knowledgeable about differences and accepting them.

Target Audience

We have designed this online course for out-of-school time professionals in before and after school, summer camps, school age or recreation programs. The course content is also appropriate for anyone interested in identifying barriers in accepting differences and how to become more culturally competent.

Course Description

This one-hour webinar course from the National AfterSchool Association was created to inspire out-of-school professionals to explore cultures and differences among individuals in ways other than festivals, flags and foods. Kari Knutson from Knutson Consulting presents the obstacles that are present today that can hinder cultural competence such as knowledge and exposure. She addresses why these can occur and how you can help to overcome them. You will walk away with a more mindful understanding of your own cultural competence, as well as how to identify barriers and create a supportive environment for everyone in your program.

In addition, there are simple activity ideas within the course to involve the children in your program with identifying what makes them unique and sharing their experiences, while also being exposed to their peers differences.

This course will help educators, administrators and professionals that work with children address the unique differences in all individuals and come together as a community to support one another.
