Target Audience

This course is designed for physical education teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels who are looking for guidance in implementing the new National Physical Education Standards. Whether you’re a seasoned educator, or just starting, this course will provide you with what you need to know to successfully employ one of the primary components of standards-based instruction: unpacking learning indicators.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the relationship between the standards, physical literacy and instruction
  • Describe the backwards design planning model
  • Follow a 5-step process for unpacking learning indicators
  • Unpack learning indicators for use in their own programs

Standards

This course addresses the following SHAPE America National Standards for K-12 Physical Education (2024):

Standard 1: Develops a variety of motor skills

Standard 2: Applies knowledge related to movement and fitness concepts

Standard 3: Develops social skills through movement

Standard 4: Develops personal skills, identifies personal benefits of movement, and chooses to engage in physical activity

About Your Instructor

Terri Drain currently works as a consultant for school districts in California, providing professional development for physical educators. Prior to this, she taught K-12 physical education - 13 years at the high school level in British Columbia and 21 at the elementary level in the San Francisco bay area. She is a National Board Certified Teacher and has earned honors as a CAHPERD Teacher of the Year, Southwest District TOY, as well as TOY for her school district, Pleasanton Unified.

Terri is passionate about the standards and standards-based instruction and has made over 200 presentations at the local, state and national levels and has also provided multiple webinars and podcasts on the topic. Her goal is to give teachers the tools and information they need to easily implement the physical education standards into their own programs.

Terri has also served the profession in a variety of capacities, including as President of SHAPE America and as a member of SHAPE America’s Board of Directors.
