Audience

Secondary physical education teachers, looking to introduce and develop pickleball skills among students.

Course Description

This course is designed to equip secondary physical education teachers with the tools to introduce and develop pickleball skills among students. Guided by SHAPE America’s 2024 National Physical Education Standards, the course emphasizes skill development, tactical awareness, teamwork, and a lasting enthusiasm for movement fostered by developmentally appropriate teaching approaches.

The SHAPE America standards highlight the importance of instruction that aligns with students’ developmental stages, helping them acquire fundamental movement skills, grasp key movement concepts, and participate in physical activities that promote overall health and motor competence.

You’ll learn how to teach the core skills (such as striking, paddling, and controlling the ball) in ways that align with physical and cognitive development and that foster enjoyment and confidence in fundamental skills. The curriculum introduces game concepts in a way that will challenge and engage secondary students.

Instructional videos on pickleball skills and strategies, review of sample lesson plans, development of mini lesson plans, discussion prompts, and reflection questions will prepare you to incorporate pickleball into your physical education program.

Course Goals

By the end of this course, you will be able to do the following:

  • Teach the development of fundamental motor skills, including paddle control, serving, and rallying.
  • Cultivate an understanding of game rules, strategies, and court positioning.
  • Promote teamwork, sporting conduct, and positive social interactions.
  • Integrate health and fitness concepts—such as warm-up, cool-down, and nutrition—into practical activities.
  • Use assessment tools to monitor skill development, engagement, and attitude.
