PE Central and Human Kinetics Professional Development
Offering dance to children in your physical education program not only allows them to develop rhythm but it is great for building coordination, strength and endurance and in some cases aerobic capacity. Dancing encourages children to express themselves with their entire body and helps them expand their overall movement skills.
Course Description
The purpose of this course is to introduce K-12 educators to the process of simple choreography and provide them the tools to create movement with music that is developmentally appropriate for their students. Creating movement to music does not have to be intimidating. Even if you “can’t dance,” you CAN create fun and meaningful movement sequences for your students that build their confidence, physical literacy, and fitness (and yours!). Educators will also identify choreography that can easily be modified for their students. This is a fun, interactive course that will leave learners feeling empowered and prepared to create movement with music ... for fitness and fun.
- identify songs that lend themselves to creative movement for K-12 students.
- identify parts of songs (chorus, verse, bridge, intro, etc.)
- count timing of different parts of songs.
- create learnable and logical movement sequences to music.
- identify locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative movements that pair well with selected music.
